19. Exhaust System Assembly
for Automobiles
1.
Technology Description
Needless to say, the
performance of all internal combustion engines used in various
types of automobiles and generators depend to a great extent
on the exhaust assemblies.
Exhaust assemblies are
manufactured by bending pipes as per original drawings and
connecting them with flanged connectors and mufflers by
welding. Mufflers are large sized cylindrical bodies
which are fitted with internal cartridge assembly for smoke
absorption and sound dampening.
The other end of muffler is connected and welded
with comparatively smaller size pipe which is called tail
pipe. The process
requires precision die making, seamless welding and compatibility
with the engine and other mountings of the automobiles and
other original equipments manufacturers (OEMs).
2.
Technology / Product
Status
The company is in production
for last 27 years. The
technology is quite proven and the exhaust system developed

& Recommendations
Conclusions
A
large number of Owners, Chief Executives and Senior Managers
of SMEs located in National Capital Region were interviewed
for obtaining their views on export of technologies / projects.
Most
of the Chief Executives agreed in one to one meetings, that
export of technologies / projects from SSIs would prove
beneficial in the long run.
Following
conclusions have been drawn from these meetings and general
surveys of the industrial units :-
·
Prominent
Sectors of operations of SMEs in NCR are : Electricals,
Light Engineering (Mechanical),
Garments, Auto Parts, Electronics, Computers, Chemicals.
· The
projects offered by SMEs are tried, tested and productionised
by them in the country.
· SME
units in NCR are aware of global competitiveness and willing
to adapt technologies / products to the requirements of
demanding customers.
·
Most of the SMEs are taking steps for ISO certification,
but lack adequate awareness about World Trade
Organisation (WTO) regulations and Intellectual Property
Rights (IPR) issues etc.
·
Many of the SMEs have potential to export high technology
and high technology intensive projects and
products, but expect incentives as offered by other countries
like China, Taiwan and South Korea etc.
·
Many SMEs suggested single window clearance system to avoid
procedural delays.
·
Most of the SMEs are not very keen to look beyond product
exports. They are reluctant or unwilling to explore
technology / project exports and the long term benefits
associated with it.
·
Preferred
target markets by the exporters for technology export promotion
are : SAARC, Middle East, Africa and EU.

Recommendations
1. A
single window should be created in the appropriate Ministry
wherein the exporters get all export related information
and clearances promptly.
2. The
potential exporters should establish contact with foreign
embassies in India and with embassies / missions abroad
to obtain lists of manufacturing associations and companies
in the target countries and explore opportunities for doing
business with them.
3. Interaction
meets between embassies and government departments / industries
associations may be organized to apprise embassies about
the market information needs of our industries for promoting
technology trade.
4. Seminars
/ conferences may be organized to create awareness about
(a) exporter’s capabilities (b) market requirements (c)
WTO and IPR related issues and enhancing linkages between
R&D system and industry.
5. Buyer
– Seller meets may be organized in India between the visiting
foreign industrial delegations and suppliers of technologies
/ projects and also outside India where a group of Indian
companies camp in the target market to interact with prospective
buyers.
6. The
potential exporters should be provided opportunities and
facilities to participate in technology related exhibitions
in India and abroad.
7. Government
should review policies and incentives for promoting technology
intensive exports in India and other countries to formulate
innovative policies for the benefits of our industries.
